Minimum Wage in San Pablo City, Are You Getting Paid Correctly?
At my age, getting hired or employed in the industry or field where I used to work is almost an impossibility. Getting hired as a Web Designer with no College Degree was already hard when I was younger because I was basically competing with College Degree holders and many were even from highly reputable and expensive universities. That was like more than 12 years ago, imagine how hard it would be today with so many graduates and very few jobs.
Of course, when we talk about employment or jobs, we can't ignore talking about salaries or wages. I've worked in a few businesses in San Pablo City but, if I remembered it correctly, Bingo Pinoy was the only one that paid minimum wage. The other jobs I've had through the years all paid minimum wage but they were all outside San Pablo City. Can you believe that?
I guess with the current commercial boom brought in by SM City San Pablo, many businesses now are paying their low level employees, at least, minimum wage but what exactly is the minimum wage in San Pablo City? How would you know if you are being paid correctly? Well, I went to check out the official website of the Department of Labor and Employment to learn exactly what should be the implemented minimum wage in San Pablo City.
As it turned out, the current effective minimum wage in San Pablo City as of January 15, 2011 as posted in the Department Labor and Employment's website is:

So, if you are lucky enough to get paid 210 PHP a day, at least, 5 days a week then you'll get a gross income of 4,200 PHP monthly. Seriously, no family of 5 can decently survive on that amount. Now, imagine if you are only getting 120 PHP a day for 5 days of work per week. That will only be like a gross of 2,400 PHP a month and many people are getting even lesser than that a month in San Pablo City.
For employers to pay such ridiculous wages is NOT even funny, it's absolutely disgusting and people should be concern about it because it's keeping the poor poorer. Even if you are getting 315 PHP a day for 5 days work per week is NO way near decent living specially if you are taking care of, at least, a family of five.
Why are the people accepting this even though it's inhumane and disgusting? Well, the most common reason would be is, "it's better than not getting anything at all" or "it's better than not having any work or job" and, you know what, employers are abusing this mentality. They know people are jobless, they know people are unemployed and they know that people will accept whatever wage they offer than not have anything.
What is our government doing about it? NOTHING! Why? Because most of the politicians that control our government are either businessmen themselves or are indebted to these businessmen for funding their election campaigns. Doing something about it would mean more for the people and less for them and they don't want that. A poor, uneducated and hungry constituent is much easier to control than a rich, educated and well fed one and our politicians know these all too well.
For the people to forget their shortcomings, these politicians will sponsor medical missions, dental missions, feeding programs, scholarship programs and whatever programs they can think of that will make them look good to you. The people don't need these programs, the people need better jobs and to get paid better. If our politicians will give them that then they wouldn't have to sponsor all of these so called programs.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Chinese ProverbAnyway, are you getting paid correctly? Our current minimum wage is FAR from being correct in terms of what the people actually need but, hopefully, you are getting paid, at least, the minimum wage. If you are not getting paid minimum wage and you are okay with it because it's better than going totally hungy then, I guess, there is really nothing more we can do about it.
