2011 Street Parade with some Dancing Competition
We went out today to watch this year's Street Dancing Competition but what we saw wasn't exactly Street Dancing. It was more like a Street Parade with some dancing added to it because the dancers were only dancing in-front of the main stage. This practice of NOT dancing and dancing only in-front of the main stage has been happening for a few years now but it seems that the organizers haven't done anything to address it.
We were on the center island in-front of Jollibee and we were able to talk to a few people who also noticed it. The Street Dancers would just walk pass everyone and would only dance when they are already in-front of the main stage. I honestly don't think you can call that Street Dancing but if that's how the organizers define Street Dancing then there is really nothing we can do about it. In fairness, a few groups did dance but that was after the host begged them to dance.
After dancing in-front of the main stage, the street dancers will not dance again. They would just walk pass everyone again. Those watching on the other side of Rizal Avenue will not see any Street Dancing at all. They would simply see a parade of colorful costumes walking pass them. I really feel sorry for those foreigners and tourists who spent hours standing and waiting under the sun only to see a parade of colorful costumes.
If you want to see some Street Dancing then you'll have to position yourself in-front of or near the main stage because anywhere else would be no good. You can also just go home and watch the LIVE coverage of the event in Celestron Cable but that is only possible if you are a Celestron Cable subscriber. If not then you are screwed. LOL!
I'm not really sure why this is happening to our Street Dancing Competition but it has to stop because people are getting disappointed and frustrated about it. Guests from other towns and cities and even foreigners came to watch a Street Dancing Competion. I'm pretty sure that they didn't come to see a Parade of Colorful Costumes.
Do the organizers even care about the quality of our Street Dancing Competition? I guess not because the quality of recent Street Dancing Competitions don't even match the level of earlier Street Dancing Competitions. Also, they have been doing this for 16 years and yet they still don't know how to properly control the crowd.
Street Dancing is not a very easy thing to do. It's a very physical activity and doing it under the sun can really put your body under extreme physical stress. Asking kids to do it is ridiculous and that is why I understand they are not dancing but if that is their reason then it should no longer be called Street Dancing Competition. It should just be called Cocofest Dancing Competition because they are just walking most of the way.
If the organizers are afraid that real Street Dancing will cause harm to the kids then they should stop asking Elementary students from participating. High-school students can endure it but they should only accept participants who are in good physical condition. They can also make the competition a Barangay competition and not a School competition. This way, participants will be mostly adults and not kids.
People came to see a Street Dancing Competition and not a parade of colorful costumes. If they want to keep it a Street Dancing Competition then they should have stricter rules about it. It should be just like the very first Street Dancing Competition were Street Dancers danced non-stop from end to finish. If the organizers can't enforce it then they should just abolish it and have a regular Dancing Competition instead.
Anyway, below are the winners of this year's Street Dancing Competition.
Kudos to the students teachers and parents of Paaralan ng Pag-big at Pag-asa for dancing most of the way. Even though they were just a special participant and not part of the competition but, still, other schools can learn from them.
